Level 17 completion guide:

Follow this, and you will find yourself with a little "play" money. But don't jack around too much. One mistake will mean the death of your precious fruit!

1) Build up an army of cacti. Start at the upper right-hand corner and be sure to hit all the corners thereafter. Really focus in on the top, though. Try to get 2-3 cacti on the top two corners. Develop to a max of 2 stars per cactus on the top. You may have 1 or 2 3-star cacti in the last two corners, but only if it's an absolute must. You shouldn't need two.

Tip: Until you have 3 cacti in every corner, powered up to 2 stars, send the bugs in early. A good rule to go by: send the butterflies and lady bugs in one after the other. Send the worms and beetles in simultaneously. The two sets of flying bugs after the ladybug are extremely dangerous. Never send them in, together. After a while, you will be far enough ahead that you can let the clock just run. Mid game/level, you won't want the worms with the beetles, but you can always send the worms early. Very late in the game/level, you won't want the lady bugs coming in with the butterflies.

2) Delete the cacti in the top two corners and replace them with fountains. Add another in the middle. Upgrade the fountains on the corners. Not the center! You only need to give them one star! Spending excess will cause the flying bugs to destroy you.

Tip: Mid game, you may need an additional fountain at the end. If you're playing well, you won't though. You can probably lose 10 bugs prior to the clutch and survive to the drift. So, don't freak out and start powering up a fountain if just one bug slips by!

2a) You may have to build up net gnomes and cacti, temporarily. Build them along the sidelines toward the end of the level.

3) Start cutting down the cacti. Every time the sale of a cactus will result in 100 or 200 gold, cut it down. You can put two rocket gnomes in the place of every cactus, and the rocket gnomes are far more powerful when upgraded. Put 4 rocket gnomes on the inside of the track, next to each fountain. Power the central rocket gnomes up, first, because the ground insects lag longer in the center. You only need to power them up to a maximum of two-three stars for a very long time. Over-upgrading will screw you out of the extra cash you need for step four. So, don't get carried away!

4) You're worried about flying bugs, right? The rocket gnomes kill off the crawlers, but the flying bugs are too fast. So, the rocket gnomes don't fire at them. Net gnomes will work independently of rocket gnomes to slay flying bugs. Station one at each corner and at the beginning.

Tip: It's going to get HARD. Do NOT keep your net gnomes alive. Instead, build 2-3 net gnomes, without upgrades. Upgrade the one at the front of the maze to max. When the insects pass them, sell and upgrade the net gnome the flying bugs will hit next. It's not as hard as it sounds. If you have extra cash, consider using it on cacti. Sell them, also, before the next wave.

5) When the grounded bugs become difficult, start alternating laser gnomes in. Situating them on the outside of the track at the top corners should be MORE than sufficient. The slow-down acts as an additional multiplier. As crawling bugs move out of range, sell and upgrade the next laser gnome. Before the flying bugs come in, quickly sell and reconstruct your net gnomes. Be sure that you place net gnomes far enough away that they damage flying bugs on the whole pass. You should have a TON of cash. A laser gnome with full upgrades and another with half upgrades, next to the rocket gnomes and fountains, ought to be able to slay any independent ground wave. The same is true of net gnomes for flying bugs. I'm pretty sure, with the fountains create a situation where only the rocket gnomes and the laser gnomes are necessary.

Final tip: If you have more than ten-eleven rocket gnomes, you might be overdoing it. I beat this level several times.... This guide should put you in a situation where you can win. Don't be afraid to develop your own styles and deviations, though! Have a bug blast. :)

Thanks for reading.
