I use much the same tactic, except on hard pacts can be broken, so i tend to attack violet as much as possible to start with, then only sign if i can’t poke his bum initially. Oftentimes you can let him win coming straight up to you while sending one big beast of a unit round the outskirts. Or i simply sign a pact with someone that can provide a wee bottleneck idea so i only have to work on one front, depending on the map.
