So Google recently sent many arcade webmasters an email about placing ads at least 150 px away from flash content making it impossible to place Google ads anywhere that would remotely make any amount decent money. I personally have not gotten the email but I know of many arcade owners that have. This notice comes right on the heels of Google having failed Wall Street Earnings estimates and may just be Google’s excuse to weed out some arcade sites from their inventory. However, this has spooked many of us and even those of us who haven’t gotten the warning are probably going to either ditch the Google Ads for other networks or re-adjust the ads. For those of us with larger inventories, we will probably just replace Adsense ads with ads from other networks. Here are a few networks worth toying with if you have a decent number of visitors(on a side note, smaller sites are pretty much out of luck because they don’t have the volume these networks are looking for).

1. Tribal Fusion — High eCPM banner network requires 500k unique visitors per month. ECPM really high if you turn on the pop-ups.

2. GAO Network — Requires 10k uniques a day and it a CPA based network but I’ve heard gaming webmasters get really good results.

3. Valueclick — Not sure about what traffic requirements there may be but their 300×250 squares and pop-unders generate good eCPM.

4. Casale Media — Like VCM

All of these require a good amount of traffic to get into so you have to have at least a medium sized site. What Google basically did recently was raised the barrier to entry into the arcade market.

So Protector 4.5 was just released lately and it feels the exact same as Protector 4. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the series and I’ve played every game 1-4 through. But I don’t think I’ll play 4.5 that much. Protectors 1,2,3, and 4 all differed from the previous one enough to make playing them exciting. Protector 4 feels like and actually is pretty much a carbon copy of protector 4. It almost feels like the author added a .5 onto the title and re-released the game. Now, I know that there are some new heroes in the game, but that does not really change the game any. New heroes just a different mix of the same basic units. The maps seem to be pretty much the same, the storyline hasn’t changed any, and overall it look just like the exact same game. I think the author would have done better just not to release this stop-gap game and just followed up with protector V some time later.

I’ve written about this before and listed some sites who use adobe’s “networking” parameter in the embed to disallow outgoing links. Adobe should really remove this feature as many sites are just abusing it and disregarding the terms of use for flash games. But since they won’t, I’d like to bring it to attention again. Please check out the portal blacklist for a list of sties who unethically block links and if you know of any other site that blocks links, please submit and add them to the list. I also have a small list here(check top left hand of the blog). If any of these portals approaches you and asks for you to add one of their games, asks for a link exchange, or asks for a partnership of some sort, you should either completely ignore them or write back saying that you absolutely will not work with sites that use the “networking” feature to block outgoing links in flash games. These sites need to be shown the door for using this practice as it is a major threat to both sponsors and developers and needs to be dealt with now. The practice is especially prevalent among Chinese sites and that is one reason why I do not work with them. These people who block links are nothing more than thieves.
